Flatholm Project Journey
Flatholm Island features
Dividing the map of the island into different sections (marked by where the flora and fauna counts were found) also allowed us to start looking at the different features of the island.

Building on the aesthetic we start to think about how we can represent each season with different colour schemes. Then we start to think about what the island would start to look like if the sea levels start to rise. An island of BLUE waters. Visualising the small LEDs bulbs… Read more…
‘Colours in nature are omnipresent and serve an essential role in providing a wide range of signals: “I am fertile!”, “I am tasty!”, “I am dangerous” ‘The Royal Society . The colours of Flatholm island range from lush green shades to barren brown tones. Each season brings its own distinct Read more…
In parallel with the design work and the development of the electronic prototypes, we have also started to explore the idea in code. At this stage, it is important for us to understand how the code will need to work in order to achieve the rotation and desired arrangements of Read more…
Our data physicalisation is made of several narrative elements. As you can see from the image below, we have Flatholm island at the heart of the experience with its rich array of Flora & Fauna and a prominent lighthouse. We want to tell the people of Cardiff about this wonderful Read more…
Focusing on the weather station data we are now thinking about how this fits into the big picture. For example, the maximum and minimum measurements of rainfall, sun, wind etc. and how these would work in the design below. Also, looking at the logbook data, we have started to get Read more…
A question for the team… Are we creating an experience with static and dynamic parts? Will the moveable/ dynamic parts present the data (updates to the data) in new and novel ways? Will the static parts encase the data into the story of the island as well as the overall Read more…
We are now starting to pull the pieces of the data physicalisation together and to think about the data sources, the practicalities of the build and the WOW factor for public engagement. In terms of possibilities, we can make something go around 180 degrees, stop and then return to its Read more…
Discussions this week were around how we are going to make this data physicalisation? What do we want to capture with the data? What size will it be? Will it be on the ground or mounted on the wall? After much discussion – particularly around health & safety- we decided Read more…
Like all multidiscipline projects… there will be challenges. Take a look at some of our recent conversations… we have creative technologists, artists, data scientists etc. all coming into the same space and trying to try their own way of making sense of everything. How exciting is this!
