Flatholm Project Journey
Working in the data

Can we do more than the binary flip of a disc? This gradual expansion of the circle might be useful in presenting different degrees of capacity. For example, full sunshine to no sunshine etc. Lots of rain to no rain. Lots of potential here in terms of narrative patterns. Going Read more…
The flip-dot display is an electromechanical dot matrix display technology usually used for large outdoor signs. We were curious about its potential for a data physicalisation so we had an explore…take a look. The disc changes position according to a change in the magnetic field.
COVID-19 meant that we could not get out to the island to experience all it’s wonder for ourselves and this really did feel like a big obstacle as we all enthusiastically made a start on this exciting project. The only solution was to try and bring some of the island Read more…
Inspired by the 3D printed cuboids… we have started to think about the relationship between the patterns and the data. Finding an old landscape monoprints (F. Carroll, 1996). We are thinking that simple geometric shapes could be used to represent weather data, wildlife data and water tank and solar panel Read more…
Simulating the dynamics’ of the patterns in Processing (a programming language for more creative problem solving). The potential here for narrative patterns is endless.
There will be days with heavy rainfall, days with some and days with no rainfall. As a team we have started to again think about the aesthetic design of this data.
We have got the Arduino and breadboard with an LED screen wired up to it. We are planning on using this to show messages and hopefully data!
Some really great possibilities already starting to emerge.
Lots of data and lots of potential different narratives. How do we layer all this different type of data? What is the best way to arrange the visual to tell the story? What is the aesthetic of the data?
