The Flatholm Island warden Mat Brown summed it up when he said ‘Imagine waking up each morning to this as your back garden’.
What an idyllic setting! And Mat and his partner Jen (who is also on the island) have a very important role on the island to ensure that this remains so. They are entrusted with the care of the island and its inhabitants. Everyday they walk around the island counting the rare Flora and Fauna (i.e. seagulls, ducks, butterflies, moths, slow worms etc.) to make sure that everything is as it should be. Also, they measure the levels in the water tank and the solar panels to confirm that there is sufficient water and energy for them and also the wildlife to exist on the island.
