Our tug-of-war with climate change. What does it feel like to be in a tug-of-war with our environment? We are starting to think more about what need to do to make an impression on people? How we embed that sense of environmental awareness into their thinking? How we enable them to feel the tug-of-war between their current behaviours (food waste recycling and traffic) and their environment? The tug-of-war between the rich biodiverse Flatholm island and the increasing Co2 emissions and rising sea levels.
Imagine many (blue) ropes which would stimulate different factors by pulling or shaking them, spaced far enough apart that multiple people could interact at once. We are thinking that perhaps we could have different ropes for different challenges – one for rising sea levels, one for air pollution, one for recycling etc. Perhaps pulling all of them together would need several people and would show a different version of the island.
Walking along the sea bank, we came across this old broken/ snapped rope and buoy. The rope is clearly weathered and has seen better days, but we can’t help feeling that it has been washed back on shore for a reason. (Especially as we, eight hours previously, started to talk about a ‘tug-of-war’ interactive rope— SMILE). Let our imagination run miles. Without a doubt, the ‘tug-of-war’ with climate change is on and this time, lets see will the rope stand the test of time to ensure that the environment will win.
